How to Add Personality to a Room using Accessories

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

One of my favorite things to do is decorate or rearrange rooms in our house. Something about that just lights a little fire inside me or something... it's fun, no? If it was a perfect world, I would completely redecorate every season!

Sidenote: The fact that Jason & I recently visited Homearama here in Louisville is just further feeding my addiction! I mean, do you SEE this mirror??

Totally want it! Spotted at Homearama.

Alas, without a limitless budget and an abundance of free time, it can be hard to completely wipe the slate clean & re-do a room from scratch. Sure, I might want to re-paint, buy new furniture and all new accessories, but a girl's gotta be realistic!

So, instead of completely starting over, I've found that I can dramatically change the look & feel of a room by switching out a few basic things to reflect my mood & totally revamp the overall feel & style of the room!

First up, throw pillows!

These are from The Bluebird Shop on Etsy

Look at all the choices! The options are truly unlimited. Try mixing different patterns, solids, colors & textures for an updated look. Throw pillows definitely don't have to be expensive, so you can created big impact for little commitment. Besides Etsy, I love looking for pillow covers at Hobby Lobby. They always seem to have a big selection and you can use your 40% off coupon and drag your boyfriend with you so he can use a coupon too. Who doesn't love an excuse to go to Hobby Lobby anyway??

Next up, artwork!
This gorgeous print is by Leigh Viner, one of my favorite artists.

Artwork is one of those areas where I think you should run wild! Inject your personality & choose pieces that make you smile. Don't feel like all of your artwork has to be by one specific artist or be a specific style to go together. I like an eclectic mix, but you can tie together by using the same color or style frames or matting. By choosing to buy art prints, you can get a lot of bang for your buck. Etsy is a great resource, as well as Ikea if you have one nearby. You could even try creating a gallery wall if you're feeling really creative!

Add a few unique pieces.

Your home is just that, your home. So my opinion is that it should reflect you, but in a chic way that makes sense. Try finding unique pieces that reflect your style, personality or interests. Say you like polka dots. Well you don't necessarily have to paint polka dots on your wall in order to enjoy them. Try a try like the one below & place on a table top full of books & a candle...

Try to display these more unique items in a way that flows with the rest of the room.

You can find these pieces anywhere, and you don't have to spend a ton of money. One of my favorite things to do is go to thrift stores or even goodwill & hunt down accessories I can clean up or repurpose. One of my favorite things I've found so far is this vintage inspired checker board.
Instead of just displaying on it's own, I used grouped it with other items to show it off.

Play around with your curtains.

Curtains are really one of those things that can take a room to the next level. Play around with color, patterns, valances & rods. Curtains are another way to add tons of personality & color to a room but are still easy to switch up. And please, please stay away from those mini blinds!

Try hanging your curtains as shown below to make your windows appear larger & let in tons of natural light.

Such a difference, huh?! You could even add a patterned valance across the top to hide the rod if you wanted.

Are you as design obsessed as me? I just love this stuff! What's another easy way you add personality to your home?
