Organization quick tips

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

Let's talk organizing! I've put together some tips that I use around my own home to keep things running smoothly, feel free to read through & leave any other tips you have in the comments. Let's get started...

Stock up on decorative and functional containers.

I literally go nuts over places like Ikea & The Container Store.. but I realize not everyone is a freak like me! Try to humor me here & get a little bit excited about containers, mmkay?

First off, for containers that will be on display, try finding something decorative & well, pretty! Search places like TJMaxx, Target, or Home Goods for different sizes, shapes & colors to fit your needs. Amazon also has some good options like these baskets, these wire containers, and these waffle shelf totes.

As for the not so pretty stuff, like dividers for drawers, or containers that will be hidden away in cabinets or closets, you can go a little cheaper here. I LOVE The Dollar Store for these type of purchases. They have lots of different sizes that are completely functional.

You can also even make some of your own by getting crafty & covering boxes you have on hand with craft paper. Velveeta boxes are the perfect size for pens & pencils. Who knew?! The big canisters from dishwasher tablets and oatmeal can also be covered & repurposed.

Pencil bags aren't just for elementary kiddos.

In elementary school I already loved organization. I would get excited about filling my new pencil bags with gel pens & going to town! These days I still get excited about pencil bags, believe it or not. Why? Because they are PERFECT for storing stuff, especially in your office area.

Pick up the kind with clear inserts, like these above from Dollar Tree & fill with everyday items. Here are some of the things I use them for:

-Pens & pencils
-Mail supplies such as envelopes, return address labels & stamps
-Tape, glue, staples
-Note pads, post-its
-Business cards
-Puzzles
-Card games >> since the boxes almost always get torn up anyway.

Store household items grouped together by function or area. Give everything a 'home' of it's own.

Here are a few categories that account for a lot of the 'stuff' in my home. I've found that by keeping each group of items together in one place, separate from other junk, I can maintain order a lot easier.

Household cleaning supplies
We choose to keep ALL of our cleaning supplies in the kitchen cabinet under the sink, organized in containers. When we need to use cleaning supplies, we pull the 'caddy' out, fill with the products we need, use them, and return to their 'home' under the sink.

Extra paper & toiletry items
Because we shop at Costco & Sam's sometimes for paper goods & toiletries, we often end up with an overflow. So for things like extra toilet paper, paper towels, mouthwash, etc. we've carved out a home in the upstairs closet to house all of these extras.

Towels & Linens
We have one linen closet upstairs that houses extra towels & sheets. Each bathroom also has it's own stash of extra towels & washcloths.

Laundry supplies
All of our detergent, fabric softener, bleach and dryer sheets are stored in baskets on shelves in the laundry room.

Dog stuff
With 2 dogs comes a lot of dog related stuff, so we've created a cabinet specifically for this purpose. It houses everyday items like leashes & collars, plus any medications, extra treats, dog shampoo, toys that are not being used, etc.

At some point I will get into more detail & show some of these areas in my home, along with other places I organize including closets, jewelry, make-up, tools and more!

What are some organization tips you find handy?

How to Add Personality to a Room using Accessories

One of my favorite things to do is decorate or rearrange rooms in our house. Something about that just lights a little fire inside me or something... it's fun, no? If it was a perfect world, I would completely redecorate every season!

Sidenote: The fact that Jason & I recently visited Homearama here in Louisville is just further feeding my addiction! I mean, do you SEE this mirror??

Totally want it! Spotted at Homearama.

Alas, without a limitless budget and an abundance of free time, it can be hard to completely wipe the slate clean & re-do a room from scratch. Sure, I might want to re-paint, buy new furniture and all new accessories, but a girl's gotta be realistic!

So, instead of completely starting over, I've found that I can dramatically change the look & feel of a room by switching out a few basic things to reflect my mood & totally revamp the overall feel & style of the room!

First up, throw pillows!

These are from The Bluebird Shop on Etsy

Look at all the choices! The options are truly unlimited. Try mixing different patterns, solids, colors & textures for an updated look. Throw pillows definitely don't have to be expensive, so you can created big impact for little commitment. Besides Etsy, I love looking for pillow covers at Hobby Lobby. They always seem to have a big selection and you can use your 40% off coupon and drag your boyfriend with you so he can use a coupon too. Who doesn't love an excuse to go to Hobby Lobby anyway??

Next up, artwork!
This gorgeous print is by Leigh Viner, one of my favorite artists.

Artwork is one of those areas where I think you should run wild! Inject your personality & choose pieces that make you smile. Don't feel like all of your artwork has to be by one specific artist or be a specific style to go together. I like an eclectic mix, but you can tie together by using the same color or style frames or matting. By choosing to buy art prints, you can get a lot of bang for your buck. Etsy is a great resource, as well as Ikea if you have one nearby. You could even try creating a gallery wall if you're feeling really creative!

Add a few unique pieces.

Your home is just that, your home. So my opinion is that it should reflect you, but in a chic way that makes sense. Try finding unique pieces that reflect your style, personality or interests. Say you like polka dots. Well you don't necessarily have to paint polka dots on your wall in order to enjoy them. Try a try like the one below & place on a table top full of books & a candle...

Try to display these more unique items in a way that flows with the rest of the room.

You can find these pieces anywhere, and you don't have to spend a ton of money. One of my favorite things to do is go to thrift stores or even goodwill & hunt down accessories I can clean up or repurpose. One of my favorite things I've found so far is this vintage inspired checker board.
Instead of just displaying on it's own, I used grouped it with other items to show it off.

Play around with your curtains.

Curtains are really one of those things that can take a room to the next level. Play around with color, patterns, valances & rods. Curtains are another way to add tons of personality & color to a room but are still easy to switch up. And please, please stay away from those mini blinds!

Try hanging your curtains as shown below to make your windows appear larger & let in tons of natural light.

Such a difference, huh?! You could even add a patterned valance across the top to hide the rod if you wanted.

Are you as design obsessed as me? I just love this stuff! What's another easy way you add personality to your home?

State Glasses >> New to the Etsy Shop

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

As all of you know, on of my most favorite things EVER is to create. Art, design, collages, signs, wreaths... whatever. Creating is fun!

Well lately I've been thinking of unique items to add to my Etsy shop, & I decided to expand my 'state' line with these two beauties...

State can be customized to fit your home state.

State can be customized to fit your home state.. of course!

and then just for fun I added this little pretty thang....

Because how fun are paper straws and mason jars? Crazy fun!
And it is just perfect for iced coffees. Yum!

I'm thinking about adding painted mason straw cups as well...
Maybe a country lyric collection...

"baby get your shine on"
"rock me mama like a wagon wheel"

Thoughts on this??

Made anything fun lately?
